Getting into the sound- November 8, 2021

Writer: Kristine AhmadiKristine Ahmadi

This past week in Independent Study and Mentorship I read an article that gave insight into the editing aspect of filmmaking. The author points out that video editing is, without a doubt, one of the most significant tasks in the movie industry. It's where the director and editors try to come up with a meaning or message for the film. A single image has a different significance than a series of images. Rearranging the shots can drastically alter the message that is given to the audience. One of the more important parts of editing is the sound editing which is usually overlooked when watching a film because people pay more attention to the image in front of them than what they are listening to. Sound is vital because it engages audiences: it aids in the delivery of information, raises the production value, elicits emotional reactions, highlights what's on screen, and is utilized to signal mood. It eliminates blunders and awkward pauses. Unwanted noises and repeated words may divert the listener's attention away from the intended destination if they are not edited out. Going along with the sound editing topic voiceover editing is also quite important. In cinema, the sound of a human voice (or voices) is overlaid on pictures on the screen that may or may not be connected to the words said. As a result, voice-overs are occasionally employed to provide sarcastic contrast. It's also possible that they're just random voices that have nothing to do with the persons on film. Voice over is a cinematic technique that may be found in almost any genre. Voice overs are used in films to provide rapid exposition, recount stories, narrate, and give an intimate insight into a character's head.

This next coming week in ISM I hope to get my third research interview with a professional.
